Reading tips for English learners

Hello, fearless learners, it’s Halima. Welcome back to this lesson. Today, I wanted to help you improve your reading skills in English. As you can tell by my voice, I think I’m losing my voice. It’s starting to sound very deep and different. Right? Am I right?

Okay, let’s look at the different tips I have for you to improve your reading skills. Now, remember that I know a lot of you just want to improve your speaking skills, and sometimes you might be thinking that if you improve your English reading skills, it’s a waste of time, or if you try to improve your writing, it’s a waste of time. In fact, it’s not. Reading can immensely help you improve your vocabulary and allow you to see the sentences structured in a natural way.

Start easy

Now, let’s start with the tips. Tip number one is to start with easy text. If you are someone who thinks about reading in a negative way, or you just don’t like reading, why don’t you start with simple texts like children’s books or comics? Maybe you want to go on a website and start reading articles on different websites. This will be a great place for you to get started with your reading.

Use a dictionary

The next tip is to use a dictionary. Whenever you see a new word, I want you to look it up, get curious, and use a dictionary or an app like Kindle. If you’re using an app, you can tap on a specific word and find out its meaning straight away. If you’re using a physical book, you’ll need a dictionary.

Practice regularly

The next tip is to practice regularly. The more you read, the better you’ll become at it. Try to set aside some time every day to practice reading, whether it’s a book, an article, or a blog post. The more you read, the more you will improve. As you read, when you find new words, have a notebook where you start noting them down. This will help you keep a record of any new words you learn and be able to go back and use them in sentences, put them on your cue cards, and memorize them so you can use them in your speaking.

Discuss what you read

The last point is to discuss what you read. After you finish reading a blog post, text, or story, find someone you can discuss the book with. This could be a friend, a classmate, or even a teacher. Discuss the main ideas and vocabulary. Maybe you have some questions about the character. Talk about it with your speaking partner, whoever it is you want to talk to. This will help you become a lot better at reading because the more you engage with what you’re reading and make it come alive, the more memorable it will be for you.

By following all these tips, you will definitely improve your reading skills. I hope you take up some of these tips and start implementing them. Thank you so much for being here, and let me know in the chat which book you’re currently reading so you can inspire other people to read a few of the books. Alright, fearless learners, see you next time.
