At the gym – English lesson

Hello, Fearless Learners! Today, we’re going to the gym. Many people go to the gym to exercise, improve their health, or just relieve stress. So today, we’re going to be looking at some phrases you might use when you’re at the gym.

Signing up

The first time you enter a gym and your intentions are to become a member, you would use this sentence: “I’m here to sign up for the gym.” Or, if you want to get a tour of the facilities or see the gym, you can say “Can I get a tour of the facilities?” People will understand you.

If you just want to try a class before you book or pay for anything, you can say “I’d like to try a class, please.”

Treadmill

Now let’s talk about the equipment. There are many types of equipment at the gym, and I’ll mention a few today. The most common equipment is the treadmill. So you could say to the person “Can you show me how to use the treadmill?” or “Can you show me where the treadmill is?” The treadmill is the machine where you run. Did you know that the treadmill was originally created for torture? That’s right, it was used to hurt people who had done something wrong.

Weight machine

Another common piece of equipment at the gym is a weight machine. If you’re not sure how to use it or how much weight to use, you can say “I’m not sure how much weight to use on this machine” or “I’m not sure how to use this machine. Can you help me?” The person may suggest starting with the lowest weight and gradually increasing the weight as you get stronger. There may also be instructions next to the machine that can help you use it properly.

Where can I find…

If you’re looking for a specific piece of equipment, such as a yoga mat or dumbbells, you can say “I’m looking for a yoga mat. Where can I find one?” or “I’m looking for dumbbells. Where can I find a pair?” Dumbbells are small weights that you can hold in your hand, and they come in different weights ranging from two to three kilograms or more.

Personal training

If you want personal training, which is when someone works out with you and helps you reach your fitness goals, you can say “Can I sign up for personal training sessions?”

If you want to join a gym challenge or a program like a 30-day training, you can say “I’m interested in joining a gym challenge.”

Cancelling a membership

If you no longer want to go to the gym, you can say “I’d like to cancel my membership, please. What do I need to do to get that started?”

These are just a few phrases you might use at the gym. If you liked this lesson and want me to do more on this topic, please let me know in the comments. This is just a taster session to get you started. Thank you for watching, and I’ll see you in the next lesson.
