5 English Idioms – Learn English

Hello, Fearless Learners! It’s Halima. Thank you so much for coming to class today. Today, we’re going to look at five idioms to help you sound more natural when you are speaking English.

You can catch more flies with honey…

So, the first idiom is “You can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar.” This means that you are more likely to get what you want if you are nice to people. For example, if someone is in a bad mood and not dealing with people well, being mean and trying to get something, you can use this idiom to inform them that by being nice, they can actually get what they want. You can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar.

Through thick and thin

The second idiom is “through thick and thin.” This means through good times and bad. For example, “We’re going to be friends through thick and thin” or “My husband and I have been through thick and thin together.” It means that we have been through all the good times and the bad times together. You can use it in different ways to mean through good times and bad.

That ship has sailed

The third idiom is “that ship has sailed.” This means that something is too late. For example, if you like someone romantically and you always wanted to talk to them, but you left it too long and now you like someone else, you can use this idiom to say, “Well, that ship has sailed.” It means that it’s too late now and you can no longer do anything about the situation.

On Cloud Nine

The fourth idiom is “on cloud nine.” This means to be very happy. You can use it in different ways, such as “My friend was on cloud nine when she received the acceptance letter to the university that she applied for” or “My mom was on cloud nine when she met her grandchild for the first time.”

Sitting on the Fence

The fifth idiom is “sitting on the fence.” This means that someone can’t make up their mind. For example, if someone asks you if your friend is moving house and you say, “Well, he’s sitting on the fence,” it means that he’s not sure and can’t make up his mind.
