10 New Dining vocabulary – English Test | Beginner

Hello fearless learners! Today I want to test your English, especially when it comes to sitting down at a table and eating. You see lots of things on the table and you don’t know what they’re called, so today I want to make sure you know what everything is called. I also want to make sure your pronunciation for these objects is somewhat understandable and correct. I want to know that you can use these words in a sentence, so let’s get started.

I’m going to show you the objects. I want you to take a piece of paper, write down what you think they’re called, and maybe check the spelling as well. If you want me to check your sentences, put them in the comments below this video. Let’s get started.

Part 1 – Basic items

Here’s your first test: what are these three different metal things called? I’ll give you a few seconds to write it down and also try to say it out loud. Say it a few times and maybe record yourself saying it so you can listen to yourself. Okay, pause the video now if you need more time, but I’m going to give you the answers now.

So the first one is fork. Fork. Fork. Notice we don’t say the “r” as much, so it’s very subtle. Fork. Fork. So if I were you, I would just remove the “r” altogether and just say fork. Sounds good, right? So remove the “r” so it doesn’t confuse you and just say fork. Fork.

Okay, the next one is probably a little bit harder because of the silent “k”. Knife. Knife. Knife. So remove the “k”. And the next one is spoon.

I want to go back to the knife. I actually forgot to write butter knife. That’s actually butter, butter, butter knife. So it’s a bit more blunt than a knife you would use in the kitchen. So if I wanted to use a knife in the kitchen, I would say knife. But the one you use on the table is butter knife, butter knife. And the next one is spoon. This one’s quite simple.

You might hear, in recipe books, they might say tablespoon. And the smaller version is teaspoon. Teaspoon.

Part 2 – additional items

Now let’s go to the next picture. I want you to look at these three different things and tell me what they’re called. They’re a few on the table right now, and you need to ask for any of these. So you want someone to pass it to you or you want someone to get it from the kitchen. There’s one missing. How would you say these three things? Pause the video now. Write it down and record yourself saying it out loud. Remember, you’re testing yourself here.

Now let’s take a look at the answer. So the first one is plate. Some people might also say dinner plate. Second one is bowl. It’s a little bit different than a “ball” that you kick around in football. And the last one is serving spoon. We use serving spoons to serve food like a big bowl of food or a big plate of food to everyone else.

Part 3 – Drink containers

Now let’s look at the next set of pictures. I want you to look at these three pictures and tell me what they’re called, just like the last time. If you wanted someone to pass it to you or someone said, “Can you get that from the cupboard?” How would you know what they were asking for? So write it down and we’ll check if you got it correct in the next set of pictures.

The first one is a wine glass. The next one, I would just say glass. Some people might have different names for it online, but I would just say glass. “Can you pass me the glass?” And the last one is a water jug. Some people with different pronunciation and accents might say water in a different way, but I’m not going to give you the satisfaction and say “Oh no, there you go, I said it.” So water jug, or sometimes people might say “a pitcher.”

Part 4 – Advanced

Now let’s take a look at the final set of pictures. This one’s a little bit harder, so for those of you who are a little bit more advanced, don’t worry if you don’t know these. They’re super useful, and if you don’t know what they are, don’t worry, you’ll learn it today and that’s okay. So pause the video now and guess what they are.

The first one is a placemat. We use these to put food on top, so you see them in restaurants sometimes. They have different materials and so on. The one next to it, the little wooden things or cork material, are called coasters. We put glasses on top of them so that it doesn’t get the wood underneath wet. The one before is a placemat.

The next picture is a tablecloth. And then the little final picture is a napkin. Some people might call it a serviette, but the second one is more British and it’s actually less frequently used than napkin. So when I checked online, napkin is more common than serviette.

Conclusion

So there you have it. How did you do? I hope you did well. Let me know how you did. Were there any new words you didn’t know what the object was called? How about the pronunciation? Are you able to use it in a sentence? Please, please, please, I love it when you guys comment and let me know how you did and what you’ve learned. That way, for the next video, I know exactly what to do.

See you in the next lesson. Bye for now.
